PALM SPRING RESIDENCE
Palm Springs to me is a very unique city. When I picture about Palm Spring houses, the
first thing that comes up to me is the swimming pool, flat roof, and transparency etc. The rulesets
that make up the houses along with the regulation. So for this project, I created a program that
incorporates rulesets and regulations to operate within this condition and at the same time challenges
them to the logic of network.
In the advertisement of the film “Ropes and Rules,” Bernard Tschumi says “The game of architecture
is an intricate play with rules that you may break or accept.” And he states that having rules
make architecture more pleasurable.
Although when I picture about Palm Spring houses, the first thing that comes up to me is the swimming
pool, flat roof, and transparency etc. that certain elements that make up the desert houses.
I started from analyzing the domestic architecture in Palm Springs, and came up with rule sets that
addresses the architype or room configuration, and exaggerate the rules to create something absurd.
(Pointing at variety of results) The network of rules can create not only the typical Palm Spring
house, but also the house that is surrounded by the swimming pool or the house that are made up
by the pavilions that houses each program by forcing the logic of rules to the limit.
From these studies, I’ve picked up one variation from the houses to develop it further. Since the result
that I picked up had the quality of separation, I looked for the strategy to unify them by extending
the floors and glasses and roofs.
